Estimated Timeline for Building a New Home

On average, it takes about 7-8 months to build a new home — but that only accounts for actual construction time. With all the things you need to accomplish prior to construction, you’ll want to allot for a few extra months. This usually leaves the timeline to total a little over a year.

Again, that’s just a rough estimate. Below, we’ll list some of the steps to the homebuilding process so you can grasp a better understanding of what’s to come.

What to Do Before You Can Start Building a New Home

Generally speaking, there are four important things you need to do before starting the construction process. 

1. Find a Lot

Before you can even consider building a new home, you have to purchase a lot to put it on. You can search through local real estate listings, browse the internet, or talk to friends and family to find vacancies. 

Location is everything when it comes to finding a lot. You want to find a lot that matches the space you need and the area or environment you want to live in. Finding a spot with a climate you find comfortable, an area you find beautiful, and surrounding activities that you find fun will lead you to a life you’ll genuinely love. 

2. Determine Your Budget

Also before diving into any work, it’s important to set aside some time to determine your budget. When you sit down and go over exactly what you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to spend, you can prepare yourself to get great results without suffering any financial stress. Being thoroughly prepared can also help you while working with a lender to secure financing. 

3. Hire an Architect and Contractor

Once you have your lot and budget settled, you should start talking to architects and contractors in your area. Many contractors will have their own internal architects, which can streamline the process a bit. 

Take a look around and see what each of them has to offer. Usually, this happens in the form of a bidding process that includes bids, interviews, and negotiations with contractors. Building a New Home: The General Process

Site Preparation
